Safe motherhood and its challenges

The best feeling of the world only a woman can describe is motherhood. Everything changes suddenly after a new life in the lap.  All the priorities come behind that little miracle. It looks very pretty and interesting but wait this motherhood pays a lot in terms of a woman's life.

Every year on April 11 we celebrate National Safe Motherhood Day on Smt. Kasturba Gandhi's birthday.  This day is the occasion to think over motherhood and its challenges. Pregnancy is a precious gift but at the same time there is always a risk for the mother. All the women go through this challenge to welcome the new life. To raise the awareness about prenatal, childbirth and postnatal services this day is a symbolic presentation to maintain healthy motherhood throughout the year.

During pregnancy and post pregnancy the most common mistakes done by Indians are improper diet plan. They don't take it seriously and that's why there is abundance of cases we can see of anemia. Anemia isn't just a pregnancy issue but even after childbirth iron intake is the key to maintain self health status as well as child's nutritional requirements through breast feeding. Anemia isn't a single challenge but it also invites other pre and post delivery complications like preterm birth, low birth weight, tissue hypoxia, postpartum haemorrhage etc.

The major ignored post pregnancy issue is the mental health of a new mother. The new journey is started with lots of new responsibilities with hormonal flood in her body. This hormonal flood fluctuates the social life of a woman. Postpartum depression is something new for us but this critical time whole family should be engaged with a new mother. The state of mind is full of child care but inbetween somewhere our society forgets the care of a mother. That's why consequences aren't limited to the physical health but also the mental health.

Safe motherhood is the key of healthy next generation. Without a healthy and mentally strong mother we can't build the country of healthy and intelligent children. Especially in remote or rural areas there needs a lot of work to be done to fulfill the gapes of child and mother care. On this day let's spread awareness to chase the boundaries of safe motherhood.

Final Funda: Safe motherhood is just a myth untill we are just conscious for the gender of a child.

Are Diabetes and Hypertension overrated?

A man aged 45 was taken to the hospital. The reason was just fall down due to vertigo. It wasn't his first time. Seldom such events were found in the history. The reason could be any serious thing but actually it was pretty simple. He was on antidiabetic medicines for last 6 months. The medicine was started just after two readings of fingertip sugar within 3 days on different time frame after and before lunch. Was it enough data to diagnose a giant one? Actually the diabetic readings were just temporary. Medications worked wrong for him and hypoglycemic shock was the reason of his fainting. Just some sugar cubes or a chocolate could be the treatment of that time for the conscious patient otherwise you just had to drip in plain dextrose infusion. World is suffering from non communicable diseases (NCD) widely. Lifestyle is the key substance behind this ' NCDemic '. Cancer, hyper or hypothyrodism, obesity, hypertension, diabetes etc are the well-known players of this team. Bu...

Why is rural India suffering from doctor deficiency?

We are moving towards the development. Indian people have changed their lifestyles rapidly in last decade. Our urban and metro areas are filled with luxurious lifestyle and at the same time villages are shrinking day by day. The only reason is the lack of the speed of development. Rapidly the cities are growing but the same thing and pace doesn't apply to the rural areas. That's why lots of inconvenience stops the people to spend whole life in village especially public servants. If public servants don't want to stay here, how will be the development of rural areas possible?   We can figure out other rural problems slowly but we can't neglect the health services. To the last person health is the most serious and necessary service for the survival and healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately we are still a little slow on it. Ayushyman Bharat Yojana tried to patch this void space but a lot of things need to be done rapidly. Almost on every 1 lac population there should be a Comm...

The horror show with antibiotic resistance

Nowadays antibiotics are the crucial medicines among all the drugs. All are oversmart enough to consume Azithromycin when sore throat or AmoxyClav when wound with pus or Clindamycin ointment for acne. But they don't know what these mighty molecules are going to be done with the future. All the infections may not require higher antibiotics. Sometimes infection may be due to virus. Here antibiotics are useless or I would say harmful. Antibiotic resistance will be a new disaster before global warming if we don't care. Can you imagine the scenario when your children will be suffering from fever and the medications will not be working for them? Can you imagine the situation of ICUs where all the heroic antibiotics may lose their ability? Can you imagine the era when a surgery will be near to impossible? Yes, we are entering into the era of superbugs. Superbugs will be the new challenge of mankind to survive. As Charles Darvin said everybody has right to survive and thes...

Nosocomial infection: The challenging part of the quality care

Infection from the hospital premises during hospital stay or visit is considered as a hospital acquired infection. Nosocomial infection is the medical term which is used for hospital acquired infection. The word "nosocomial" is made up of two Greek words. The prefix "noso-" comes from "nosus" meaning disease and "-comial" comes from "komeion" meaning to take care of. Nosocomial could therefore refer to any affliction acquired by a patient while under medical supervision. It now refers more narrowly to a hospital-acquired infection. The most important parameter of hospital is nosocomial infection rate. This rate decides the quality of services provided by the hospital authorities. We know that this hallmark metric of quality do not just reveal a number but the essence of the preventive care by the hospital itself. To serve the biggest population while controlling the infections all around the premises is the challenging work in India, ...
